I'm really enjoying the concept and pacing to start the story. The cards initially threw me off from the blurb, but they are not a lame Yugioh type and instead fit well with fanatasy, more like spellbooks. if you've read jake's magical market then you'll have a good idea of the cards system. The story execution is solid along with the scale and rate of discovery of the world. The character is young to start at age 12, but I'd imagine we will hit a time skip at some point.

The inner thoughts and perceptions are accurate, but 12 year olds are known to be annoying for a good reason, they are. The writing is as solid as you'll find on RR with few errors with varied sentence structure and length. The imagery is great and the mind's eye readily constructs the world. I really look forward to reading more and tagged follow and favourite for such a promising story.

Great Story

Book 1 is exceptionally good. It is very reminiscent of standard fantasy stories such as Wizard of Earthsea, where you have a boy in a remote location facing difficulties and wanting to learn magic. And a tragic event gets them to leave on a temporary journey out of their homeland with an adult before being handed off to a better location to grow and get stronger. The setting in book 1 is very immersive and the writing makes you want to keep reading.

However it does get a worse in book 2 and 3 because you no longer have that structure and is replaced by a more militaristic hierarchical setting. But the story is still enjoyable. It may be a frustrating when the main author has flaws and don't see enough character growth because he only has growth in terms of power and accomplishments and not in the things he really wants emotionally. It works as a child like all the thieving he did but as he gets older, it becomes very hard to read because he never resolved them because of the privileged he gain, and how self-serving and narrow his goals become.

But I do see it improve in book 4 as he is in a new place.

Stated out great! Then the pacing just DIED

I really like this story. The premise of heart cards and the abilities they bestow is a good one, the MC is a good enough fellow that lucked into some powerful card abilities and then does some amazing feats! Like cooking! And sewing! Total badass.

...

Sigh.

The MC escapes his hometown with the promise of glory and adventure, and it starts out good enough. He doesn't immediately become some op Gary Sue, but slowly learns the best way to make use of his abilities.

We then learn about Dragon Riders, which is an awesome concept, and the Rarities that match those of cards, which gets our excitement way up with the promises of an OP protagonist. However.. once we get deep into the Dragon Rider chapters, the story comes to a screeching halt.

Chapter length decreases significantly, and each one covers less and less the closer we get to him meeting an ultra rare dragon. Less and less happens per chapter and we even spend a whole chapter on him learning how to sew, just a couple of days before this hyped meeting.

I never had any issues with the pacing of the story, right until it started getting good. Now it seems like the author is pulling out every stop to drag out the upcoming event, and it's getting down right hard to read. It's not just that things keep interrupting the story, it's the silliness of the things that are stopping him. I guess I'm just being frustrated and kind of wish the story would move on.

Never been a big fan of card-systems but this is a good story and characters with depth. Looking forward to binging more chapters soon! I just discovered this series a day or two ago and already caught up to the most current. I lost sleep last night reading too long... =)

The most inspired part of this fiction is its worldbuilding and it is the reason i keep reading it. The grammar is also good. Sadly everything else is watered down. 60 chapters in and there is no clear goal for the MC, will he become a badass dragon rider? will he focus on crafting? will he become a rogue and keep running? since ch 20 nothing is resolved. From character building perspective we have little to nothing other than he is a bleeding heart and extremely naive when the plot required it.

The worst part for me is the 4 years time skip in which nothing really happened other than the guy with an OP power fail to understand how to apply it. He is living in an army camp (the hive) and somehow the only thing he does is cooking and being a barman?

But even here, one could turn a blind eye. The icing on the cake, and my personal biggest downside, unfortunately, are the remaining characters who show a hint of personality in approach, but are nullified in any stiff conversation and weird outcomes. Best friendships are made within what feels like 3 chapters, so that they sacrifice themselves for one another and joke ironically if knowing for years. It just doesn't work. Plus unfortunately, I'm not interested in any of the characters - too little information of them, no background etc - besides Arthur and maybe his former best friend, who was literally thrown out and not mentioned for 50 chapters (why invest so much in the character then if you kinda erase him?)

The pacing is sadly not good as well, dicisions characterwise are mostly illogical and parts are dragged out to a point which is annoying.

Well, but still, I enjoyed the story extremely at the beginning and it is nicely written.

It's an insanely good story. I really enjoyed the first 50 chapters, especially the world-building, fresh ideas, and Arthur's character development from a confused child fighting for survival to a hardworking young adult with clear goals. However, Arthur is becoming more and more of a Gary Stu character - a plot train comes out of nowhere and takes away the story's credibility, too many coincidences in his favour happen and he struggles with literally nothing.

Minor spoiler:

I could forgive that, but the story also suffers a lot from the family constellation around Arthur. Always new (unbelievable) and confusing revelations about his family, as well as his false personality that he assumes - which no one of the higher authority care to check - are simply annoying. That he is besties with the upper elite is unbelievable as well.

But even here, one could turn a blind eye. The icing on the cake, and my personal biggest downside, unfortunately, are the remaining characters who show a hint of personality in approach, but are nullified in any stiff conversation and weird outcomes. Insane Potential

The majority of the LitRPG stories, or any fantasy progression really, veers off from the established setting, breaking the pattern they first became famous for, and then inevitably start dying off. In simpler words, most stories lose their own consistency in about twenty chapters. All The Skills, up to its 17th chapter, has not lost one single bolt during this race; it's hard to imagine it would anytime soon too.

Style

Good. It can be a bit too descriptive at times and a bit lacking in the description at others, as I've seen some other reviews reference the latter. Considering that this is the web version and not the paper-published one, it's to be expected. Some quick editing would fix this. Also, it doesn't impact the overall experience.

Grammar

Perfect.

Story

Even though I'm not a huge fan of this MC, it still roped me in. The story compels you from an emotional point without bludgeoning you to death with clichés. It has some stereotyped elements, but they are so well placed that they feel fresh.

So far, the narration is slow but deliberate. It's not one of those LitRPG that fetishes min-maxing since the day you were born; at the same time, it does invite the readers to think about all the possible combinations with the MC's extremely rare card.

There's definitely some anticipation for what the next card is going to be. The fact that the author didn't rush in that regard and is making the MC earn it is invaluable. It foreshadows a relatively weak plot armor.

Character

Young MCs are relatively hard to write. It's not easy to get a good read on how a 12-year-old acts and thinks. Even those who grew up in a scourged village. This is probably the one thing where it could improve by a good margin. I don't feel Arthur's age, nor do I feel much about his father. Their characters are likable and easy to place, but not distinctive enough that I would identify the MC by any particular characteristic. Still, even if a touch anonymous, they are believable. Plus, being so young, there's still time for the main character to evolve and show us some of his quirks.

All in all, a wonderful novel that deserves 5 stars. Go read it.

The Hallmarks of a Great Book

One criterea I use to seperate if a book is ok, interesting, good, or great is how easily I can go to sleep at night. I swear, there is a contest out there amongst authors throughout the multi-verse to see how they can inflict readers insomnia upon their patrons. Well, I can't put this book down. I've tried. I even went so far as to be a patron on patreon so I could read ahead, something I never do. So, if you want to piss off your significant other, show up to work or school bleary eyed on too little sleep, and forget to pick up your kids from soccer practice, this is the book for you!

In all honesty, HonourRea has developed an absolutely complex storyline of what happens when the wrong types of people are given unrivaled power. The protagonist, Arthur, is literally brought up from the very bottom of the food chain and has to scrape out a living while hiding the fact he has been given a legendary power himself by an unknown benefactor. Not only doe Arthur succeed, but he thrives in the only way he knows how, by doing everything he can to get stronger.

I absolutely endorse this series! It has great progression timelines, provides opportunities to see unique exploitation of magic, and the writing is top notch! There are some minor spelling and grammar errors periodically throughout the series, but nothing that detracts from the story.

Found this gem from Reddit and devoured it in a few days. It's rare that you get both a slice of life combined with a great story, but this tale achieves both.
For those who love skill based stories, card based magical systems, along with dragons, you will love this one. Our MC gains a legendary card that changes his life from a peasant in a penal town to the potential to become a dragon rider. The author also does a great job of painting the picture of how a young boy can truly change his life.
Very few grammatical mistakes that I caught and the writing is top notch.
