Easy Sugar Cookies Recipe {Soft and Chewy} (1)

How to make best soft and chewy sugar cookies?

  1. Cream together butter and sugar.
  2. Mix in eggs and extracts.
  3. Mix in flour, baking powder, baking soda.
  4. Make small balls.
  5. Roll in sugar.
  6. Bake.
  7. Frost them if you like and enjoy!

How do you make sugar cookies keep their shape?

  • Measure ingredients correctly because baking is science and this would ensure that your cookies turn out exactly like mine and all those ingredients and quantities work together to create perfect results.
  • Chill the cookie dough balls in the freezer for 15 minutes and then bake. This will slow down the spreading during baking.
  • Don't flatten the cookie dough balls because that just makes them spread even more, while they bake.

Are snickerdoodles and homemade sugar cookies the same?

No, they are not the same. Classic Snickerdoodles Cookies have a spiced flavor and are rolled in cinnamon sugar. They also typically have cream of tartar as one of the main ingredients. These cookies, on the other hand, are loaded with vanilla flavor and rolled in granulated sugar. Both cookies have a soft and chewy texture though.

How long do Christmas sugar cookies last after baking?

They can last up to 3 days in a sealed cookie jar at room temperature, unfrosted. They can last up to a week or more, frosted, if you store them in a sealed container in the fridge. You can also freeze them in air-tight sealed freezer bags for up to 1 month.

Tips and Techniques

  • All ingredients should be at room temperature because that allows them to blend together smoothly and evenly.
  • Don't over-mix the dough because that will make very tough cookies
  • These are not Rolled or Cut Out Sugar Cookies. Those ones can be decorated with Royal Icing or Glace Icing and they can be cut into various shapes with cutters.
  • Use unsalted butter to prevent cookies from becoming too salty.
  • Don't replace butter with oil because that will change the consistency of the dough and make it very sticky.
  • I have tested this recipe with other types of flours and all-purpose gave the best soft and chewy texture.
  • Almond extract is optional and only adds a hint of flavor. It is a strong extract and I highly advise you to go easy on it.
  • Instead of vanilla extract, you can also use vanilla bean but that will add little black specks in the dough.
  • If the dough is difficult to handle or feels sticky, cover bowl with saran wrap and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes to make it easier toll into balls.
  • Sugar cookie icing/ frosting- Use this Classic American Buttercream Frostingor Marshmallow Frosting or White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting or even Cream Cheese Frosting. Icing can also be tinted with gel coloring to make them more festive (E.g. Pink for Valentine's Day, green for St.Patrick's Day e.t.c.)

Delicious and easy! Consistency of the cookies are light and fluffy inside. Only change I’d make is adding a little salt as I thought some salt would compliment the sweetness. Thank you for a yummy recipe!Easy Sugar Cookies Recipe {Soft and Chewy} (15)

FAQs

What makes cookies soft or chewy? ›

If you enjoy your cookies soft and chewy, chances are likely the recipe contains a common ingredient that serves a very specific purpose. No, it's not granulated sugar, nor the butter. It's not the egg, all-purpose flour, or even the vanilla extract. The simple, yet oh-so-necessary component is cornstarch.

What is the secret to making cookies soft? ›

Baking cookies quickly in a hot oven – at 375 degrees F as opposed to a lower temperature – will make for soft results. They'll bake fast instead of sitting and drying out in the oven's hot air. Ever so slightly underbaking your cookies will give you softer results than cooking them the full amount the recipe says.

What factors cause a cookie to be crisp soft and chewy? ›

The ingredients you use and how you shape your cookies both play an important role in whether your cookies turn out crispy or chewy. The type of flour and sugar you use, if your cookie dough contains eggs, and whether you use melted or softened butter all factor into the crispy-chewy equation, too.

What are three factors that contribute to a chewy cookie? ›

Salted butter, softened – I prefer salted butter but you can also use unsalted and add an extra pinch of salt to the dough. Brown sugar – Just brown sugar because we will get the 'granulated sugar' flavor from the corn syrup. Corn syrup – The corn syrup is what makes these cookies CHEWY FOR DAYS.

How do you make cookies soft instead of crunchy? ›

Remember moisture is the key! White sugar creates crispier cookies and brown sugar creates chewier cookies. Why use melted butter? Melted butter creates cookies with a different texture compared to cookies made with softened or creamed butter.

Should I use baking soda or baking powder in cookies? ›

Baking soda is typically used for chewy cookies, while baking powder is generally used for light and airy cookies. Since baking powder is comprised of a number of ingredients (baking soda, cream of tartar, cornstarch, etc.), using it instead of pure baking soda will affect the taste of your cookies.

What makes cookies softer butter or shortening? ›

Shortening is 100 percent fat, meaning there is no water in it and no steam is created during baking. The lack of water also means that shortening does not increase gluten production, so cookies made with shortening tend to be softer and more tender.

What makes cookies fluffy and not flat? ›

Flour adds fluff and texture to the cookies. Adding too little flour can cause cookies to be flat, greasy, and crispy. Most recipes assume you'll use all-purpose, but if you want a lighter, crumblier cookie texture, choose one with a lower protein content such as cake-and-pastry flour.

Why are my sugar cookies so hard? ›

This isn't the case with sugar cookies, though. Once the edges develop a golden hue, you've gone too far. While overcooked sugar cookies are certainly still palatable, they'll be hard and crunchy, instead of soft and chewy.

What does brown sugar do in cookies? ›

Brown sugar, meanwhile, is dense and compacts easily, creating fewer air pockets during creaming—that means that there's less opportunity to entrap gas, creating cookies that rise less and spread more. With less moisture escaping via steam, they also stay moist and chewy.

What is the best sugar to use in cookies? ›

Because of this caster sugar is generally the most versatile and preferred of the two when baking – its small granules mixes more easily and dissolve more readily when combined with other ingredients giving biscuits, cakes, pastries etc. a more even, less coarse texture.

Which sugar is best for cookies? ›

Granulated sugar

Using granulated white sugar will result in a flatter, crispier and lighter-colored cookie. Granulated sugar is hygroscopic, so it attracts and absorbs the liquid in the dough. This slows down the development of the gluten (flour), which makes the cookies crispier.

How do you soften homemade sugar cookies? ›

How to Soften Cookies With Bread
  1. Snuggle ¼ slice of bread per dozen cookies into the bottom of the container (use plain white bread, since it won't transmit any flavors).
  2. Allow to let sit covered for 24 hours, and replace the bread as needed, every time it starts to get stale. ...
  3. Don't have any white bread?

What determines the moistness of a cookie? ›

Water in the butter will aid in leavening the cookie during baking and any remaining water after baking will contribute to moistness in the cookie's texture. The higher butter cookie has slightly more spread than the low butter and control. The biggest difference is in the flavor and mouthfeel of the cookie.

What does it mean if cookies are soft? ›

Soft-baked cookies are often made using a solid fat with a higher melting point, which prevents the cookie from spreading while baking. The result is a thicker, softer, chewier cookie. Another simple trick for softer cookies is to use chilled dough.
