History of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd, originated from ancient European weather lore and the Christian Candlemas Day. German immigrants in Pennsylvania adapted the tradition, using a groundhog instead of a hedgehog to predict the weather.

The first official celebration in America was in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where the legend of Punxsutawney Phil, the weather-predicting groundhog, began. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter while no shadow indicates an early spring. This quirky custom has grown into a widely celebrated event across North America, drawing thousands of visitors annually.
