Bailey’s Irish Cream Jello Shot Recipe is a 5-ingredient recipe for Saint Patrick’s Day! These fun and festive “grown-up treats” take no time to prep too!

Servings: 36 shots

Ingredients

US CustomaryMetric

  • 750 ml Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur (1 bottle)
  • 2 cups hot coffee, or espresso
  • 5 packets unflavored gelatin, divided
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • whipped cream

Instructions

  • Line a 9X9 inch baking dish with plastic wrap. Pour the hot coffee into a medium bowl. Whisk in the sugar. Then briskly whisk in 2 packets of unflavored gelatin. Whisk fast to ensure there are no clumps. Pour the coffee gelatin into the prepared pan. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until firm. Then use a wooden skewer to poke holes in the surface of the gelatin. (This will help the two gelatin layers stick together.)

  • Heat 1 cup of Baileys Irish Cream on the stovetop or in a microwave safe bowl. Heat until it almost simmers, then briskly whisk in 3 packets of unflavored gelatin, making sure there are no clumps. Then whisk the remaining bottle of Baileys into the mixture. Pour the Baileys gelatin over the coffee gelatin. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, until completely firm.

  • Gently lift the entire sheet of gelatin out of the pan by the edges of the plastic wrap. Cut the gelatin into 36 squares. You could also use a small 1 – 1 1/2 inch cooker cutter to make round jello shots.

  • Pipe small dollops of whipped cream on top of each jello shot. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

Although a portion of the Baileys Irish Cream is heated, these do contain a significant amount of alcohol. Serve to guests 21 and older.

FAQs

What is the best alcohol to put in jello shots? ›

Because of its neutral taste, vodka is widely considered the best liquor for Jell-O shots. It's like a blank canvas for the other flavors. This recipe doesn't require a fine vodka; a good enough budget-friendly bottle will do since, in this case, it's all about the sweet gelatin that balances the vodka.

What is the ratio of alcohol to water in jello shots? ›

A standard recipe made with 3 ounces of Jell-O powder calls for 5 ounces of 80-proof vodka and 11 ounces of water, but this results in a shot that tastes watered-down. To make a stronger shot, use just 4 ounces of water and between 8 and 14 ounces of vodka (to taste)

Is 1 cup of vodka too much for jello shots? ›

Jello shots won't set properly if you add too much alcohol. Generally, a basic batch of jello shots is made with one cup of juice or water, one packet of gelatin, 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 cup of alcohol. However, jello shots can be made with as much as 2/3 cup alcohol without changing their texture.

Do you have to wait for jello to cool before adding alcohol? ›

If you add the alcohol to the boiling hot Jello and water mixture, all the alcohol will just evaporate because alcohol has a lower boiling point than water. Be sure to allow the Jello/Knox/water mixture to cool to about room temperature before adding the alcohol.

Should alcohol be cold when making jello shots? ›

Note: The colder your alcohol is, the better the result. I think this has to do with the activation of the gelatin. Personally, when possible, I keep the bottle of alcohol in the freezer for several days before making my shots.

Do jello shots get stronger the longer they sit? ›

Jello Shots, like life, are all about balance. That said, if you want a strong one, it is possible if you leave it in the fridge long enough. In a Supercall experiment, we found that the strongest Jello Shot that will set is three-to-one ratio of 80-proof alcohol to water, and it took a full day to become mostly solid.

Do you spray cups for jello shots? ›

Pour gelatin mixture into paper or plastic shot cups* and chill in refrigerator until set, 1 hour or more. *Reviewers suggest coating the shot cups lightly with cooking spray so the shots slide right out.

How many jello shots does a 6 oz box make? ›

1 small box of jello yields about 15 jello shots (2 cups of liquid). 2 boxes (or 1 large 6 oz. box) yield 30 shots, which will fit nicely on a baking sheet to transport them easily to the refrigerator.

Can you put lids on jello shots before they set? ›

Make sure your liquid is completely cool before adding lids so you don't get condensation forming on the inside of the lid. Set your jello shots: Put your jello shots in the fridge for 2-4 hours until set. Once ready to eat, set them out for your guests and enjoy!

Should you flip jello shots? ›

That's where a new trick comes into play that promises to make downing those Jell-O shots at the party so much easier to consume: turn the shot upside down to prevent the Jell-O from sticking to the cup.

How far in advance can I make jello shots? ›

A jello shot container will yield 12 shots if the cups are filled to the top, or if you fill them half way you can get about 20 shots per jello box. Nutritional information assumes 12 shots per jello box. You can make these shots 7-10 days ahead of time.

When making jello shots, do I replace the water for alcohol? ›

Empty jello powder into a large mixing bowl and add the boiling water. Continue stirring for two minutes or until the jello is completely dissolved. Add in the 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 cup of vodka. Stir until mixed and pour into 2oz.

Why don't jello shots get you drunk? ›

DON'T Expect Jello Shots to Get You Drunk

“Jello Shots should be less boozy than a standard co*cktail as far as the amount of booze,” Williams says. While people can go heavier on the booze, the standard Jello Shot holds significantly less alcohol than a regular shot.

What flavor vodka is best for jello shots? ›

What vodka should I use for Jell-O shots?
  • Strawberry Lemonade: strawberry Jell-O, lemon vodka.
  • Mixed Berry: raspberry Jell-O, blueberry vodka.
  • Dreamsicle: orange Jell-O, vanilla vodka.
  • Peaches and Cream: peach Jell-O, vanilla vodka.

Is titos good for jello shots? ›

All right, add your jello. Mix 2 cups of boiling water. I put one cup of Smirnoff cherry vodka. Then, of course, Tito, because that's our favorite Tito Cup of that.

What is the best cheap vodka for jello shots? ›

You don't need to break the bank when choosing a vodka for your jello shots, but you don't want the intense taste of a really cheap option, so go for something mid-price range like Absolut or Smirnoff. They will be smooth enough to not distract from the taste of your jello while still being easy on the wallet overall.

Is Jack Daniels good for jello shots? ›

Add a twist to your party with these delicious Jack Daniels jello shot recipes. Impress your guests with unique and flavorful shots that are sure to be a hit. Try them now!

Does alcohol affect jello? ›

Not only do high-proof spirits deny the gelatin access to water for hydration, direct exposure to alcohol may denature the proteins altogether, rendering them useless. Likewise, some plants contain protein-digesting enzymes that can destroy gelatin as well.
