Course Summary

This course offers you the opportunity to explore materials, methods and processes to support a range of art, design and media activities, and to begin to develop your creative skills.
Through an introduction into to art, design and media, you will gain knowledge, skills and understanding to progress to further education or employment within the creative industries. In this qualification you will:
~be introduced to the materials and processes used in art, design and media, and the skills necessary to record and express your ideas
~use research skills to support your creative activities
~be introduced to the communication skills used in support of creative activities. You will gain an understanding of how communication skills can help to inform and develop your ideas
~be able to explore and solve 2D, 3D and time-based creative problems
~demonstrate your personal strengths in art, design and media in a Final Major Project. In this project you will use knowledge, understanding and the skills you have developed in previous units throughout the year.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade D/4 or above. Level 1 Diploma in Art and Design, appropriate NVQ Level 1, or another relevant Level 1 or Foundation qualification. You will have an interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

How Is It Assessed

This course is assessed by continual assessment, rather than exams. Students research, plan and produce practical work. All assignments have interim assessment points, this is when the lecturer assesses the work and shows the student how to improve their grades. Students requiring any support in producing written work, organising themselves or managing their time can access our academic mentors. All student work is moderated by the awarding body.

How Is It Taught

The course is taught at our brand new Digital and Creative Hub at Cauldon campus, opposite Staffordshire Univerity and Hanley Park, by a team of specialist lecturers who help you to gain the most from the course, and you will also be allocated a personal tutor. The course is delivered through a mixture of practical workshops, lectures and self directed study and you will be continually assessed through project work. Learning takes place in a friendly yet challenging atmosphere in specially designed facilities. This includes traditional classrooms, a photographic studio, graphics, art and design & ceramics studios.

What Could I do Next

With a Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design you can progress on to a range of courses, including an Extended Diploma in Art and Design, Graphic Design and Digital Imaging. All students receive careers advice from their tutor and student services.

You will also continue to study maths and English Functional Skills or GCSE in order to improve your employability and progression opportunities.
